Sarnaut is a broken world. Formerly (largely) peaceful and prosperous, 10 years ago, a great cataclysm occurred, known as the Breaking. Little is known about the cause of the breaking, and much of that is shadowed by rumor and speculation. Some think that it was caused by the mortal races’ overuse of magic, others speculate that it was an experiment gone horribly wrong. There are even rumors that the Breaking was caused by a powerful demon, who destroyed the world in anger.
Sarnaut’s remaining population clings to magically stabilized allods, and eke out their lives. On the larger allods, there was sufficient aetherite to maintain survivable conditions, though the conditions vary wildly from allod to allod. Several of the larger allods maintain their allegiance to the old Empire and Coalition, and have created magical ships, powered by shards of Aetherite the size of a Halfling, which are capable of travel between the allods, and fighting off the denizens inhabiting the Astral.
The party begins their adventure on the allod of Lightwood, and are currently operating under the auspice of the ruling mage council of Novograd.
